I'm an American professional soccer midfielder and one of the first openly gay male players in U.S. professional soccer. Here's what has my attention right now.

Staying steady on the pitch

My focus on the field is the same as it has always been: consistency. Across my time in the USL Championship with North Carolina FC, the milestones have kept piling up, including 150 games and more than 10,000 minutes on the pitch. Those are numbers that speak to showing up game after game. "Steady" is how I describe my role in midfield, and it's the thing I'm proudest of in my game.

Advocacy for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport

Since I came out publicly in 2018, using my place in the game to push for inclusion has stayed central to who I am. Since 2021 I've pledged 1% of my salary to Play Proud, a Common Goal initiative focused on making soccer more welcoming for the LGBTQ+ community. That work also shows up in projects like the Football v Homophobia podcast and a Pride collaboration with BetterSleep, where I narrated a story about the power of inclusivity in sport. Telling that story honestly still matters to me as much as the soccer does.

Collecting art off the field

Away from the game, my other long-running interest is art. I studied art history and have become an avid collector over the years. It's a different kind of discipline than sport, and I like that the two sit side by side in my life. It's a reminder that an athlete's story is never only about what happens on the field.
